Supporting Veteran-Owned Small Businesses

Paul Hoiland, owner of True North Custom Hat Works, is a proud Army Veteran who was medically retired after sustaining combat injuries in Iraq. Paul turned to cowboying as a component of his recovery and joined the Jinx McCain Horsemanship Program, where he learned the basics of riding and roping. After expressing interest in learning a trade, Paul was introduced to the Apprenticeship Program where he discovered hat-making and knew he had found his passion. A startup assistance grant from Semper Fi & America’s Fund and a grant for his workshop provided by The Home Depot Foundation allowed Paul to launch his successful business.

The only custom cowboy hat maker in Minnesota, Paul takes pride in sourcing materials that are manufactured in the USA. Considering trying out a new trade? Paul’s advice is simple. “Do it. Try it out. These types of jobs are integral to the country’s success and future. There’s a passion in each avenue of the trades to be found, cultivated, and experienced. Be afraid to fail, and be ready to succeed, because it is truly a learning process.”
